The IRS receives more than 95,000 applications for tax-exempt status each year. We've provided the following guidelines for when you can expect to hear from us. What happens after I submit my application? After you submit your application for tax-exempt status or other determination request through Pay.gov, you will receive a confirmation email that the IRS has received your application. Your application may include enough information for the IRS to make a determination without contacting you. However, an IRS Exempt Organizations specialist may contact you if we need more information to process your application. The specialist will mail you a letter and/or call you or your authorized representative. The letter will contain the name, address, direct telephone number, and fax number of the specialist working on your application. Has my application been assigned to a specialist? Applications submitted after the postmark date in the chart below have not yet been assigned to an Exempt Organizations specialist. Keep checking this webpage for updates and await IRS contact.
